International Living Rooms

When dreaming of a new design scheme, most of us tend to focus on a particular colour or element to base a theme on and work from there. However, more and more homeowners are looking for alternative ways to express their creativity.

Which is why we think that now would be an excellent time to consider decorating your living room with your very favourite foreign country in mind.

Now, there’s no need to get your passport out - we’ve globe-trotted all around the Internet to bring you our list of favourite designs.

Here’s our rundown of nine internationally inspired living room ideas.

1) Great Britain

If you love a good cup of tea, a nice cozy pub and a comforting Sunday roast, chances are that you have a soft spot for the land which brought us The Beatles and The Spice Girls. Bring some of those classic comforts into your home with the addition of British-themed accents. For more ideas, check out House and Home’s guide to classic British Room ideas.

2) Japan

Japan is a beautiful country rich in tradition and natural beauty – so it’s easy to see why many homeowners choose to decorate their homes with these key features in mind. The use of neutral colors and natural elements create a calm, welcoming and serene environment to come home to after a busy day. We love this this Japanese- inspired living room, courtesy of HGTV.com as it mixes traditional features with modern day nuances.

3) Caribbean

How would you feel if we told you there was a way to stay on vacation permanently? It would be nice, but not very practical. However, choosing to decorate your living room with a Caribbean theme in mind just may be the next best thing. To get you in a 5 o’clock somewhere state of mind, check out decotist’s guide to decorating with a Caribbean Influence.

4) Mexico

Create a cheerful and upbeat space inspired by one of the most naturally stunning countries in the world by implementing the use of bright colours against neutral backdrops. A Mexican inspired living room will have you feeling as if you’re relaxing at a five- star resort – all in the comfort of your own home.

5) USA

There are so many unique and interesting elements to our neighbors to the south that it could almost be overwhelming to conjure up a design theme. We say, go beyond the stars and stripe and focus on your favourite American city to pay tribute to. We love this idea for a New York themed living room, found via themerooms.blogspot.ca.

6) Indian

When we think of Indian décor we think of rich, sumptuous fabrics and stunning deep colours. This gorgeous home, featured on Decholic.com, takes Indian inspired decor to the next level – as it bypasses the traditional crimson reds and burnt oranges in favour of deeply exotic blues.

7) Egyptian

Make your living room fit for a king – King tut, that is. Mixing ancient Egyptian inspired elements into your design scheme will give your home an opulent, chic feel. Check out SFGate. com’s guide to making a room look Egyptian for tips to get you started.

8) Italy

Italian-inspired décor tends to mix neutral yellows and creams with natural stone accents. This living room, from House to Home , will have you feeling as if you’re relaxing in a Tuscan villa.

9) Greece

From what we’ve seen on TV and the Internet, the Greek islands look like Heaven on Earth. This picture below is an actual villa you can rent in the Ioanian Islands – and it’s loaded with Grecian-themed inspiration.

Next time you decide to redecorate your living room, consider adding some touches inspired by your favourite international destination. The decorative opportunities are endless – let Mother Earth be your muse!
